Recent Stock Purchase July 2018

Been away on a family road trip for ten days across Arizona and haven’t been paying too much attention to the markets as of late which is why I have not made my July buy till now. Looking at my July stock considerations, I was really pining for some Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) after that stock was taken to the woodshed several weeks ago and has since rebounded nicely from its recent low. I still might pick some SBUX next week though if prices remain around $50. Instead, I went with another stock that was recently beaten down and has been a favorite hold of mine for a while. I always say that you can never predict when Mr. Market may throw a good sale your way. With that being said:

I have added to my taxable account 6 shares at $88.76 for a total investment of $532.56 in AbbVie Inc. (ABBV). With this recent purchase my taxable account holdings in ABBV now totals 142.9737 shares with a market value of $12,711.79. This was a commission free trade.

What do you think about my recent buy? I already know that many of you have picked up SBUX recently and wonder if ABBV will make your July buy list as well. Please let me know below.

Disclosure: Long SBUX, ABBV

    • Hi Passivecanadianincome,

Keep saving whatever you can for your next potential buy. With PM tanking huge in one day, CAH, SBUX, ABBV and today ITW, you are sure to get another good buying opportunity somewhere.

    • Hi IWD,

Happy to be a fellow ABBV shareholder. I think many like the price under $100 so it still seems like a good buy at current prices based on forward PE and current yield too. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

    • Hi MDD,

Needing funds seems to be a common “problem” for many long term dividend growth investors. We all buy when we can. Keep saving and looking for your next potential buy.

    • Hi LB,

Dropping share price is what I look for when building up my passive income portfolio. The dividend still appears to be safe and as long as those quarterly payments keep coming in I’ll be a happy long time investor and ride out any of the near/mid term highs and lows. Thank you for commenting.

  1. HUT –

Loving the purchase and has been on my radar. Curious – what are your thoughts on the payout ratio? What metrics are you using? Thanks DH, would love to hear back. Great yield!

    • Hi DD,

The first thing that attracted me to ABBV was the sudden decline. That got my radar beeping. Just like when SBUX dropped, PM, CAH and looks like ITW today. Second, I think the Humira patent issues are overblown. Forward PE looks very attractive, the yield is juicy and still appears to be quite safe so I nibbled. The payout ratio seems sustainable at current levels. Still think it’s a good potential long term hold.

    • Hi MR,

You can never time any buy perfectly. Believe me I know the feeling about buying and watching prices drift lower. My remedy for that is simply to buy more and average lower, reinvest dividends and hold on for the long haul. So far it has worked out for me. Happy to be a fellow shareholder.

    • Hi DP,

Happy to be a fellow ABBV shareholder. Like any biotech/health company it will have its ups and downs over the years but overall I’m happy to hold on to it in my portfolio for the foreseeable future.

    • Hi DD,

Believe me I don’t always pick the bottom for my buys. I just like to take advantage of sudden overblown declines that may take place here and there and nibble. SBUX, ABBV, PM and looks like ITW today have all experienced huge one day declines. Why not take advantage of a Mr. Market sale in some high quality dividend payers. As you already know, I just buy consistently during all market conditions. Consistency is key to the DGI game.

    • Hi ED,

I got a good chunk of ABBV from my ABT shares and from there I added here and there. I like the company a lot long term and felt compelled to nibble after its quick decline. Today it looks like ITW may be on some DGI radars. Thank you for commenting.

  2. Like Lanny, ABBV has been on my radar. I’m looking forward to seeing what metrics and what attracted you to the stock. Great company, great products. Will be curious to see how this one plays out. Enjoy the new dividend income from this purchase and I’m sure you will enjoy every Humira commercial that much more 🙂

    • Hi AFFJ,

Earlier this month it was all about SBUX and now it looks like many are looking at ABBV. You have to take advantage of those sales Mr. Market gives you 🙂 Thank you for commenting.

    • Hi MJtM,

SBUX and ABBV have been popular names as of late. Both are solid companies and when prices dip many take notice. I have both on my watch list for a potential buy in August. We’ll see where I buy. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.
