Dividend Income Update April 2020

It’s dividend income update time. One of my favorite times of the month as I get to review my previous month of passive income received from my dividend income portfolios.

Without rehashing the wild ride we experienced in the market the last couple of months, I could find comfort in one thing, my dividends. As we all know, the market may move up and down irrationally and seemingly on a whim while our dividends remain much more stable, reliable and predictable (even with those occasional cuts we all experience). Sure, dividends may not increase every year and a cut or elimination is even possible but the odds are greatly reduced when you diversify among different companies and sectors and focus on dividend quality (free cash flow, EPS, payout ratios and simply cash on hand). With that being said, let’s take a look at my April 2020 dividend totals.

Dividend income from my taxable account totaled $704.00 up from $458.52 an increase of 53.5% from April of last year.

Dividend income from my ROTH account totaled $280.23 up from $164.83 an increase of 70.0% from this time last year.

Dividend income from my IRA account totaled $97.80 up from $69.25, a year over year increase of 41.2%.

Grand total for the month of April: $1,082.03 an increase of 56.2% from April 2019.

An overall solid year over year increase which in my book is always a win. Who wouldn’t want to continually grow their passive income stream in the face of so much near term price uncertainty? As mentioned above, stocks will rise and fall on a seeming whim but those predictable and reliable dividends keep chugging along even with those occasional cuts.

Are any of these dividend stocks in your portfolio too? How was your April dividend income? Please let me know below.

Disclosure: Long all above

    • Hi MDD,

The craziness continues through the summer. Oh well… what can we do other than continue to invest and find safe dividends… though these days even safe dividends can be cut it seems.

    • Hi Tawcan,

Hitting four digits is always a nice goal to reach at the end of the month. Bottom line… having some cash come in during these crazy times is very comforting.

    • Hi CN,

That’s why I like dividends. They help. Bottom line. Work is good, work is bad. Unemployed or employed… having something come in is better than nothing. Companies are still operating and sending us cash. I’ll gladly take it.

  1. Outstanding YoY growth across all the accounts, DivHut. That’s the way to do it!
Big tobacco really delivered for you in your Brokerage account in April, but you had a nice collection of four $50+ payers as well. I see the Canadian banks continue to hold down the fort in your Roth account, too. Set it and forget it there.
Four-digit income in these unique/tough times is quite a haul. Congrats on cracking $1K in April dividends.

    • Hi ED,

I have no problem holding big tobacco. I know some do not like investing in that sector. Canadian banks are my big players in the ROTH. Still holding on to my TD, BNS and RY for the long haul. Though these days we’ll if things can still get crazier. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

We share 4 companies this month (LEG, IRM, KMB and CAH) albeit in lower amounts, except for IRM! 🙂

    • Hi DP,

Thank you for your comment and continued to support. No doubt these are tough times we are all navigating but I know that somehow we will find ourselves on the other side of all this. Keep on building on your end.

    • Hi European DGI,

Thanks for those kind words. I still need to diversify even more as some positions account for too much of my passive income. Always a danger if there is a cut.
